October Wine Selection
2016 - Gewürztraminer | Dry
The 2016 Gewurztraminer had beautifully balanced ripening with acidity to carry the aromas and flavors of this expressive white wine. The fruit was hand harvested on October 27, 2016 from our Estate property and Harbor Hill Vineyard, also in the Leelanau Peninsula appellation. Like a symphony this white wine expresses many aromas and flavors of tangerine, lychee, ginger, rose petal and spice. The mid pallet and body supports flavors of richer cuisine such as curries, grilled shellfish and creole dishes.
2016 Pinot Noir Rosé | DryOur Pinot Noir Rose’ is a new world wine, made in old world style. On October 21, 2016 we hand harvested our Estate Pinot Noir, destemmed and crushed the fruit and let it cold soak for 12 hours. During the cold soak tannin from the skins released into the juice providing just a touch of color. The pink juice was then fermented in barrel (20%) and stainless steel (80%). The barrel fermented lot had sur lie aging and batonnage (fine lees stirring); providing texture, mouthfeel and notes of vanilla and smoke. This wine brings ripe strawberry, fresh orange peel, notes of vanilla and smoke that close with a touch of minerality. Perfectly paired with cheese and charcuterie, Nicoise salad, seafood and rosemary roasted chicken.
2016 Pinot Noir | Dry
During the rush of 2016 harvest we took a deep breath and brought in the Pinot Noir. The grapes were hand harvested on October 28th, destemmed and cold soaked for three days. The fruit was then fermented with several yeast in small open top containers. Secondary fermentation and aging took place in 40% new French oak and 60% neutral French oak. We were pleased to let this wine age in oak for 12 months, which is seen in the lush and soft mouthfeel. Our Pinot Noir delivers flavors and aromas of black cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, cocoa, cola, black tea, orange peel, brown baking spice and a hint of smokiness. Pairs beautifully with robust cheeses and charcuterie, grilled salmon with red wine sauce and beef braised with mushrooms.
2016 Cabernet Franc| Dry
2016 was an exceptional growing season and it shows in our Cabernet Franc. This variety is grown in two different blocks situated on high points at our Estate vineyard. Before harvest it felt the snap of cold winter temperatures, which created the perfect situation for a long cold soak and a slow fermentation. Respectful French oak carries the violets, cassis and pomegranate. Long tannins bring length and structure balanced with acidity; a true expression of cool climate red wine.
2016 Blaufränkisch Reserve| Dry - Pre-release Special
Blaufränkisch, one of our most celebrated wines. This grape is perfectly suited to our cool climate region and we have been crafting Blaufränkisch since 2007. The 2016 vintage was hand harvested on October 22 bringing long, lacy tannins and a pop of acidity. The fermentation took place over 13 days in open-top fermentation bins. The use of four different yeast strains added to nuance and complexity, while aging in 75% new French oak for 18 months enhances mid palate. This wine is fruitful with rustic blackberry and mulberry, black pepper notes carry throughout with a finish of cedar spice.
